My 3 1/2-month-old went four days with no BM last week and is going on his fifth day this week. Is this okay?

Q: I have a 3 1/2-month-old boy who is breastfed. He went four days with no BM last week and is going on his fifth day this week. Is this okay?

A: Breast milk is such perfect food for babies that there is often very little waste. It can be fine for kids over about 2 months who are getting breast milk only to go several days--even eight days--without a BM, as long as it is soft when it emerges and the baby does not seem to be in pain.

In my practice, the first time a baby goes seven days without a BM, I like to see them once, just to be sure this is normal for them.
