Letdown:
Frequently Asked Questions
What is letdown and why does my body do it?
What is
it?
It's a reflex--a tingly feeling in your upper chest that you get from
the stimulation baby provides when he first latches on. If you pump,
you may feel your letdown reflex a minute or so into your pumping
session. However, some moms don't feel letdown until a few weeks into
breastfeeding.
What's going
on in there?
Letdown is your
milk ejection. What you're feeling are your milk glands sending breast
milk through the ducts to your nipples.
Is it possible
to feel it without the baby even around?
Some women feel
letdown if they just look at a picture of their baby! Other women
feel letdown, and even leak milk, when they hear a baby (any baby!)
cry. But it's usually your own baby breastfeeding that triggers it.
How does my body
know which breast to send the milk to?
It doesn't--which
is why you may leak out of one breast while your baby drinks from
the other. That's one reason why nursing pads are so handy!
